Working in education is not a job, it is a calling. Even for those who plan to work with kids for a short season, that short season is a calling to build superheroes. David looks at how educators can help students discover their superpower. He shares his personal journey as an at-risk student then becoming a High School French teacher who was working with at-risk students. LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Keeping your sanity in the wild world of teaching

- The 90/90 principle: Getting 90% of your students to get a 90%
Statistically, the average teacher doesn’t last more than five years.
The events of 2020 and 2021 taught us that educators need a roadmap for cumulative well-being, perhaps even more so than students.
While the mantra of “do it for the kids” has done a lot of good for children, many teachers have allowed their health to decline and find themselves at a breaking point.
Furthermore, the COVID Mantra for teachers was “put kids first no matter what it takes.” This approach leads many teachers to dismiss their own struggles, or worse, feel bad for even having challenges during Covid.
This talk gives educators the necessary steps to arrive at total well-being. It also calls all of us to reframe our personal devotion and commitment through the lens of well-being. There is a way to encourage health and wellness for all–students, teachers, parents, and administration. This talk brings forth the necessary (and challenging) conversation that addresses teacher well-being.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Recognizing healthy teachers produce healthy classrooms, fostering a climate for healthy students and school climate.
- Guiding teachers to employ the power of positive psychology to rewrite their own stories. Teachers will know that it is okay not always to feel okay, and we will look at how to handle this.
- Giving teachers strategies to “survive the 5” (years of teaching) and thrive beyond.
- Validating the efforts teachers have undergone, celebrating what has been accomplished, and calling teachers to commit to developing and growing to achieve their best year ever–even during or just after a global Pandemic.
David is a long-time advocate for children’s mental health and now champions the call to help students and educators arrive at total well-being. The events of 2020 and 2021 taught us that health could not be compartmentalized into: physical, mental, educational, or financial health. Health and wholeness are all comprehensive.
This talk brings forth the necessary (and sometimes difficult) conversation that addresses the well-being of students and educators. This talk also empowers its listeners by letting us step back and say, “we are not weak, we are not odd, the entire world is facing this, here are some strategies so we can succeed together.”
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Recognizing each student is a unique, powerful human being and sharing that with the world is important in arriving at total wellness.
- Validating the reality of PCSD and going beyond “you can do it,” “dig deep,” “how badly do you want to succeed”, and giving real solutions to traverse collective stress our society has not yet confronted.
- Showing audiences what happens in the brain when we react to hearing “due to a national shortage” or “per CDC guidelines.” Knowing the science behind stress and trauma can give students strategies to their challenges.
- Giving students communication and negotiation techniques that help them find a team around them who can help them succeed.
- Giving students step-by-step tools to own their own education, recovering what was lost in the classroom, and growing stronger through PSCD.
The world is changing quickly, students (and teachers) are fatigued, and we face an abundance of stimuli on multiple fronts. Many are working 12-15 hour days, and it seems like the day ends with “how less behind will I be today?” While this is the first time we have faced such a unique crisis in our lifetime, this is by no means the first time we have undergone such an immense challenge in the history of humanity. And every time in human history, the grit, creativity, and resilience inside the human race is the winner! Today will be no different.
David uses his hilarious, motivational-comedy format and shares his story of how he went from being considered an “at-risk student” to graduating with a bachelor’s degree and then earning his Master’s Degree. David talks about: what goes on in the brain when there is constant change and disappointment and how to re-wire the brain to find success regardless of what is happening. This keynote gives his audience steps to find the fire to succeed and thrive in all climates.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Creating a move-forward-no-matter-what-plan. This is different than a “fallback-plan”; a move-forward-plan is constantly progressing, no matter what happens in the world.
- Setting up your life, so your future belongs only to you and nobody or nothing.
- Re-wiring the circuitry of your brain for success and well-being, even in the face of discouragement, disappointment, and exhaustion.
